Swimming pool water treatment

Keep your swimming water clean and enjoyable.

The treatment of swimming pool water is paramount. This special action must be carried out rigorously to obtain and maintain clean and healthy water. The water of a pool is a natural component that contains micro-organisms and in which the proliferation of bacteria occurs very quickly.

Associated with this natural effect, temperature variations, pollutants and pool traffic are points that do not help to sanitise your pool water especially when the temperature is high both indoors and outdoors. To keep your pool water looking good all year round, you should therefore use a suitable treatment medium.

From chlorine treatment, through bromine or even salt (electrolysis), there are different products to best disinfect your pool according to your needs and expectations.

Each water treatment method has its weak and strong points: let's determine your needs together to find the best solution. Why is bathing water balance important?

Bathing water balance refers to all measurable parameters in the water of a swimming pool.

It is thanks to the maintenance of a controlled balance between all the parameters measured in the water that it is possible to enjoy clear, clean and pleasant water for swimming throughout the season. TAC, pH, TH, stabilizer, all values must be measured and combine perfectly with each other to obtain an optimal water balance.

And for good reason: it is by precisely controlling all the control values that pool water treatment can be fully effective.

How to analyse your pool water

As one of the essential steps in successful pool maintenance, pool water analysis requires knowledge of the various constants to be continuously observed in the water.

With the help of different colorimetric tests or even liquid reagents, it is possible to know how the water parameters behave and therefore to adapt the treatment to obtain 100% clean and healthy swimming water.

Parameters for performing a complete pool water analysis

  • The pH

The pH (or Hydrogen Potential) is a data that measures the acidity or basicity of water.

In a pool, it is essential to obtain permanently a pH value ranging from 7.2 to 7.4. If the pH is too low the water will be acidic and may therefore generate discomfort as well as irritation on the bathers. On the contrary, a pH above 7.4 will make the water basic and the latter will then encourage the proliferation of algae. The pH is therefore a value to be controlled and adjusted manually on a regular basis or controlled via an automatic pH regulator for greater convenience.

  • The disinfection source

The disinfection source parameter is the element that removes and prevents the growth of bacteria in the water.

By disinfecting the water with maintenance / treatment products adapted to your pool, the water is kept healthy, regardless of the frequency of swimming and external hazards that can affect the balance of the pool. Several possibilities are available to you to carry out this action of disinfection of the bathing water while maintaining an optimal balance between the various recommended control points.

  • The TAC

The TAC for Total Alkalinity Titer (or Total Alkalinity in English) measures the amount of mineral salts present in the pool water.

It represents the alkalinity of the water and directly affects the overall stability of the values. This water value limits the fluctuation of the pH which makes it an essential parameter for successful pool treatment. By indicating the concentration of carbonate and bicarbonate ions in the pool water, the TAC ensures enhanced effectiveness of water treatment.

  • The TH

The Hydrotimetric Title (TH) is a measure of water hardness.

The hardness of a water is measured according to its calcium and magnesium salt content. This parameter helps to manage calcium deposits that can form on the pool liner and even scale up your filtration equipment in particular. The higher the T.H., the harder the water and conversely the lower the T.H., the softer the water. The values of this parameter are to be controlled and it is estimated that the correct T.H. for a swimming pool water is between 10°f and 25°f.

  • The pool stabiliser

This chemical element protects the disinfection source of a chlorine or salt (electrolysis) pool from UV rays that naturally absorb the chlorine treatment.

Also known as isocyanuric acid, pool stabiliser must be scrupulously maintained so that the water does not become unfit for swimming. The concentration of this product is essential so that the chlorine does not lose its disinfectant effect.

Analysis and management of clean bathing water are specific areas requiring precise and constant attention.

What water treatment should I choose for my pool?

To keep pool water nice and clear and clean, it's not enough to set up a filtration system or even to operate a cleaning robot. It is important to complete the maintenance actions of your pond with a suitable treatment in order to avoid the proliferation of algae or even bacteria in the water.

The products for disinfecting and treating swimming pools are very numerous today. It is difficult for owners to see clearly in the different treatment possibilities for their pool... Here is an overview of the different treatments available to maintain your pool on a daily basis with efficiency.

Chlorine treatment

Chlorine treatment is the most common method of disinfecting water in swimming pools for individuals, luxury condominiums and professionals. Highly effective and easy to use, chlorine combats bacteria, fungi, viruses and organic matter in the water. Packaged in pebbles ranging from 250 grams to 500 grams, simply place them in the skimmer baskets so that they consume naturally and disinfect the pool.

Chlorine therefore offers you ease of use but requires almost daily checking especially in high season to ensure quality water.

Also, be careful not to overdose chlorine in the pool as this product remains a chemical: like all products of this type, misuse can present significant health risks for bathers.

What you need to know:

You can also find granular chlorine (also known as chlorine-shock) in shops

This allows you to drastically increase the chlorine value in certain exceptional conditions.
For example: when putting water in or to catch up on water that has turned green.

Bromine treatment

In the same way as chlorine, bromine is an effective oxidiser and disinfectant for your pool.

Packaged in tablet form and not in pebbles like chlorine, bromine must be used in a brominator. This device installed in your equipment room contains all the bromine tablets and diffuses them into the water slowly and evenly so you don't have to do it manually.

In contrast to chlorine, bromine is much less odorous and has equally important disinfection properties. When chlorine loses its effectiveness when the pH is too high or when it is absorbed by UV rays, which requires the use of a stabiliser for example, bromine remains an effective product that does not require any additional additives.

Bromine disinfection is, moreover, widely used for spa maintenance and treatment. Product consumption is reduced and the disinfection is ideal for both hot tubs and large pools.

The only negative point of the Bromine pool treatment: the price.Bromine is generally more expensive (by 30 to 40%) than chlorine for identical containment. Its many qualities nevertheless make it a preferred solution for many pool owners.

Salt treatment

Salt treatment is among the most popular automatic solutions in the pool market.

And for good reason: with an electrolysis treatment, your interventions on the pool are limited to only cleaning the pool. You can forget about your water chemistry: the salt automatically regulates the water values to relieve you of this daily control action.

Salt treatment a more comfortable and healthy solution because the disinfectant source is natural!

By installing a device installed in the technical room of your pool, the treatment will be done automatically and will implement a natural action. The salt chlorinator produces chlorine thanks to the salt contained in the pool. Once transformed, the salt therefore benefits from the cleaning and disinfecting powers as much as pure chlorine.

Salt is added to the pool once a year and it is sometimes necessary to add a few bags during mid-season depending on the needs. The loss of salt can be explained by the loss of water in the pool (example: cleaning the filter, natural evaporation of water, leakage from the pool...).

The salt treatment can finally be very useful if you have sensitive skin. Much less aggressive than other treatments, the production of chlorine (by the salt) is instantaneous which banishes the risks of overproduction.

While this pool treatment device is more expensive than a traditional or manual treatment, it very quickly becomes profitable as you save considerable time by no longer having to worry about your water and its balance.

Active oxygen treatment

Active oxygen is a treatment in its own right.

Completely odourless and can be coupled with an automatic treatment device, the active oxygen treatment method is widely used for indoor pools to avoid unpleasant chlorine inhalation.

Active oxygen is a powerful disinfectant and oxidant that acts very quickly in the water. It is very effective especially during a shock treatment when the water has turned or turned green.

When used, the oxygen supply in the water should be monitored regularly to avoid risks during potential overdoses. Even if this product is considered to be natural, it is obviously necessary to avoid an excess of chemistry that could cause various problems with bathers.

Good to know:

It is not recommended to use active oxygen for pools larger than 50 m3.
The effectiveness depends mainly on your pH, between 7.2 and 7.4 and the amount added to the pond.
The effectiveness time is also very limited unlike slow disinfectant solution (like chlorine pebble).

Pool water treatment requires a precise study according to your pool and your expectations.

Depending on your needs, MC Piscine experts offer you the installation of automatic treatment devices (chlorine/pH regulation, salt chlorinator, dosing pump). Thanks to the automatic pool regulation, free yourself from the constraint of managing the parameters of your swimming water.

We are also able to repair your treatment system in case of failure.
